Our MissionThe aims and objectives for which the IEI is constituted, are to promote the general advancement of Engineering and Engineering Science and their applications and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas on those subjects, amongst the members and the persons attached to the Institution. IEI functions with and amongst the professional engineers, academicians and research workers and provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the government, the industries, the academic and the engineering community. IEI is the pioneer body to introduce non-formal engineering education programme, successful completion of which is recognised as equivalent to a degree in engineering by the Government of India, the Union Public Service Commission, State Governments and public/ private sector organisations. IEI with its Headquarters at Kolkata is administered by a national Council with the President as its Head and operates through 18 State Centres & 76 Local Centres located at capital and towns of Industrial and academic importance all over the country. The Council consists of the President, 2 immediate Past Presidents, 16 elected members from the eligible state centres, 28 representatives elected from divisions,18 Chairmen of State Centres,14 Chairmen of eligible Local Centres, 5 Chairmen of Autonomous Fora. 4 prominent engineers are also co-opted on the Council. 2 Members from the above members are appointed by the President as Vice Presidents.

ROYAL CHARTER At the Court at Buckingham Palace The 13th day of August, 1935 PRESENT, TIIE KING'S MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTY IN COUNCIL WHEREAS there was this day read at the Board a Report of a Committee of the Lords of His Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council, dated the 1st day of August, 1935, in the words following, viz.:-
"YOUR MAJESTY having been pleased, by Your Order of the 21st
day of February, 1935, to refer unto this Committee the humble Petition of Sir
Thomas Guthrie Russell, President of the Institution of Engineers (India) and
others praying for the grant of a Charter of Incorporation to the said
Institution:
"THE LORDS OF THE COMMITTEE, in obedience to Your Majesty's said Order of Reference, have taken the said Petition into consideration, and do this day agree humbly to report, as their opinion, to Your Majesty, that a Charter may be granted by Your Majesty in terms of the Draft hereunto annexed." HIS MAJESTY, having taken into consideration the said Report, and the Draft Charter accompanying it, was pleased, by and with the advice of His Privy Council, to approve thereof, and to order, as it is hereby ordered, that the Most Honourable the Marquess of Zetland, one of His Majesty's Principal Secretaries of State, do cause a Warrant to be prepared for His Majesty's Royal Signature, for passing under the Great Seal a Charter in conformity with the said Draft, which is hereunto annexed. (The complete text has not been reproduced) Foot Note : In the second decade of the last century India was embarking on industrialization. A report of the Industrial Commission in 1916 recognized the importance of the engineering profession. Proposals were mooted in 1918-19 for the formation of an Indian Society of Engineers. Finally the Institution of Engineers (India) was formed and registered at Madras in 1920. Sir Thomas Holland was one of the active participants leading to the establishment of the Institution and could be considered as its founder. The Institution was granted a Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1935 by His Majesty King George V of England.
