Foot Note :

In the second decade of the last century India was embarking on industrialization. A report of the Industrial Commission in 1916 recognized the importance of the engineering profession. Proposals were mooted in 1918-19 for the formation of an Indian Society of Engineers. Finally the Institution of Engineers (India) was formed and registered at Madras in 1920. Sir Thomas Holland was one of the active participants leading to the establishment of the Institution and could be considered as its founder.

The Institution was granted a Royal Charter of Incorporation in 1935 by His Majesty King George V of England. The Institution is the largest professional organization in India with a membership of over 400 000.

Er. Rajan C. Mathew is a first class chemical engineering graduate of 1978 who did his engineering studies at the Govt. Engineering College, Trichur, Kerala. After having his specialized post graduate education in ‘Equipment and Plant Design’ at the erstwhile Roorkee University (now IIT-Roorkee) he joined Steel Authority of India Limited, Bhilai Steel Plant in the year 1980 as Graduate Engineer (Chemical).

Mr. Mathew was the first officer in charge of the Water Chemical Treatment Plant Section of the thermal power plant, which came up during the 4.0MT expansion stage of Bhilai Steel Plant (Presently under M/s. BESCL). In this capacity he was successful in commissioning the first water demineralization plant, providing training to the new operation and maintenance staff and establishing smooth operating parameters of the plant. He was also responsible for setting up the power station laboratory and establishing the chemical control regime of the power plant. Within a few years he has earned a reputation as a water treatment and boiler chemical control expert.

In 1986 the BSP management required his services in the Bhilai Engineering and Design Bureau with a specific task to device ways and means to implement water conservation and pollution control systems for Bhilai Steel Plant for the first time. He was the pioneering formulator of many water conservation schemes for Bhilai Steel Plant due to which the make up water requirement of the steel plant came down drastically. Later on Mr. Mathew was instrumental in the design and implementation of many de-bottlenecking schemes and projects of Bhilai Steel Plant mainly in the area of Water Management and Pollution Control during the 1988-1994 period by being with BEDB.
